EATING & DRINKING
Kuleana Pizzeria INTERNATIONAL $
(Post St; meals Tsh2500-7500; breakfast, lunch & dinner; ) Simple good vegetarian
meals (pizzas, omelettes, sandwiches and breads) and a good mix of locals and expats. The
friendly owner feeds many street children.
Diners INDIAN, CHINESE $$
(Kenyatta Rd; meals Tsh5000-18,900; lunch & dinner; ) This odd, timewarp
serves some of Mwanza's best Indian food, though Chinese decorations and menu items
are holdovers from its previous incarnation as Szechuan.
Binti Maringo INTERNATIONAL $
(Balewa Rd; meals Tsh200-7500; 8am-6.30pm Mon-Sat, 10.30am-3pm Sun) Sand-
wiches, salads, wood-fired pizzas and all-day breakfast in a simple open-air spot. There's
all-you-can-eat Mexican or pizza (Tsh10,000 per person) on some Wednesday nights.
Profits support the Kuleana Center for Children's Rights, which houses and educates street
children.
Yun Long CHINESE $$
(Nasser Dr; meals Tsh5000-17,000; lunch & dinner) The food is exceptionally ordinary
(unless you can convince the Chinese chefs to cook you something authentic), but we love
this place anyway because of its leafy lakeside garden overlooking Bismarck Rock.
New Mwanza Hotel INDIAN, INTERNATIONAL $$
(Post St; meals Tsh5000-10,000; lunch & dinner; ) This 1st-floor, open-air res-
taurant is known for its Indian food, though there's also Chinese, Continental and Tanzani-
an, including several styles of tilapia. Dinner doesn't start until 7.30pm, but the ground-
floor coffee shop serves a smaller menu 24 hours. The Jambo Stars play live and loud on
Friday nights (Tsh5000) starting at 10pm.
Hotel Tilapia INTERNATIONAL $$
(Capri Point; meals Tsh8000-15,000; lunch & dinner; ) The hub of Mwanza's expat
population has an attractive terrace overlooking the lake and a choice of everything from
Japanese tepanyaki to Indian to continental. But give the pizzas a pass.
