In-Depth Information
postcard-quality lake views; those on the south face the car park. It's very noisy on Friday
nights due to the band across the street.
New Mwanza Hotel HOTEL $$
( 028-250 1070; www.newmwanzahotel.com ; Post St; s d Tsh75,000-120,000, d
Tsh95,000-140,000, ste Tsh250,000; ) This three-star place has five-star pre-
tentions, but it's second-fiddle to the newer Gold Crest across the street. Still, the remod-
elled rooms have character (like the all-glass showers) and there's a long list of extras in-
cluding a gym, casino and good restaurants ( Click here ). Stay elsewhere on Friday nights
unless you have industrial-strength earplugs since the band plays late into the night.
Kishamapanda Guesthouse GUESTHOUSE $
(Uhuru St; s/d Tsh10,000/12,000, s without bathroom Tsh8000) This tidy little place down
a tiny alley is one of the best cheapies in Mwanza; even the shared bathrooms have ceiling
fans and there are Western sit toilets.
Ryan's Bay HOTEL $$
( 028-254 1702; www.ryansbay.com ; Station Rd; s/d/ste US$90/120/180; )
This new place with lake views has seized much of the holidaying miner and NGO worker
business from the Tilapia. Though rooms are undeniably better, it's lacks the character of
its competition.
Mwanza Yacht Club CAMPGROUND $
( 0784-510441; Capri Point; camping per person Tsh10,000; ) Mwanza's stop on the
overlander's trail, this has simple facilities but a great lakeside location and good food.
Kantima Hotel HOTEL $
( 0754-093048; Kenyatta Rd; r Tsh15,000-25,000; ) Less cheery than Christmas Tree,
but a good backup should it be full. Rooms are bright and clean and have hot water, fans,
and TVs.
Tulale Guesthouse GUESTHOUSE $
( 0782-464130; Shinyanga Rd; r Tsh15,000-20,000; ) This spic-and-span guesthouse
directly across from Nyegezi bus station is a good choice for the night before a dawn de-
parture.
