In-Depth Information
after his presidency. Boxes of Nyerere's personal effects, including his diaries, a
handwritten Swahili translation of part of Plato's Republic, and collections of
his poetry are also there. Although these are not on display, you can ask the staff
to see them.
In the family compound next to the museum you can see his two homes (ad-
mission Tsh1000; 8am-6pm) , still occupied by his wife and son; his father's
house; and the graves of Nyerere and his parents. His mother's house, where he
was born, along with the houses of his father's 21 other wives no longer exist.
There are frequent dalla-dallas to Butiama (Tsh3000, one hour) from Mu-
soma.
SLEEPING
Most guesthouses are in the city centre, east of Mukendo Rd. The currently dumpy Silver
Sand Inn, near Tembo Beach Hotel, is in line for an upgrade to a three-star resort.
Tembo Beach Hotel CAMPGROUND, GUESTHOUSE $
( 028-262 2887; camping Tsh15,000, r Tsh45,000; ) With its new jacked-up prices,
what used to be the best bargain in Musoma is now one of the worst, but the sunset-facing
beachfront makes it worth considering…if you don't mind that noisy overland truck com-
panies frequently camp here. Rooms (the ones upstairs have a loft bed) are clean and the
restaurant prices (Tsh3000 to Tsh4000) are reasonable. Follow the signs north of town.
Matvilla Beach CAMPGROUND $
(camping per person Tsh10,000; ) Out at the tip of the peninsula, 1.5km from the centre,
this is a gorgeous spot amid the rocks with hot showers; however, as the bar is the main
business, it can be noisy at night.
Mlima Mukendo Hotel HOTEL $
( 0716-922969; Mukendo Rd; s/d Tsh20,000/ 30,000) The sloppy construction can be
off-putting at first sight, but the big rooms with fan and hot water are priced below similar-
quality rooms elsewhere. It's on the main road, so take a room at the back.
New Peninsula Hotel HOTEL $
( 0787-679620; Mwisenge Rd; r Tsh30-60,000. ste tsh80,000; ) The long-stand-
ing Peninsula, about 1.5km from the town centre, has faded but reasonable rooms, but the
best feature is a somewhat quieter setting than the other more central hotels in this category.
It has a beach (no swimming because of bilharzia) and pool up the road, but they're filthy.
