In-Depth Information
( 028-262 1267; www.andbeyond.com ; r per person all-inclusive US$1500; )
Self-described as 'Versailles meets Maasai', few luxuries are spared at this eclectic rim-
top lodge (actually three separate lodges) and few spaces lack crater views; even the toilets
have them.
Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge LODGE $$$
( 027-254 4595; www.hotelsandlodges-tanzania.com ; r per person full board US$330/
460; ) If all other lodges on the rim are full, but you really want a room with a view,
consider this large relic, which can only be recommended for its excellent setting.
Kitoi Guesthouse GUESTHOUSE $
( 0754-334834; r without bathroom Tsh7000; ) This unsigned place is the newest and
best of four guesthouses in Kimba village, near the crater. The ablution block is out the
back; and so are awesome views of Oldeani. On request someone will cook food or heat
water for bucket showers. Officials at the park gate may insist that you have to pay the
camping fee upon entering the park, even if you plan to sleep in this village.
Almost all visitors eat at their lodge or campground, but you can eat with park employees
and drivers. Mwahingo Canteen ( breakfast & lunch) at headquarters does chicken, pi-
lau and beans and rice, while Osterbay Bar ( lunch & dinner) behind headquarters has
a pool table, satellite TV and serves mostly nyama choma (barbecued meat). There are also
several small restaurants and bars in Kimba village.
INFORMATION
The NCA is under the jurisdiction of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority
(NCAA), which has its headquarters ( 027-253 7006; www.ngorongorocrater.org ;
8am-4pm) at Park Village at Ngorongoro Crater and an information centre in Arusha ( Click
here ) . Entry costs US$50/10 per adult/child five to 15 years for single entry lasting 24
hours. The vehicle fee is US$40/Tsh10,000 per foreign-/Tanzanian-registered vehicle per
day.
All fees, including those for the crater and walks, are paid at Lodoare gate ( 6am-6pm)
, just south of Ngorongoro Crater on the road from Arusha, or Naabi Hill gate on the border
with Serengeti National Park. Should you wish to add days or activities to your visit, you
can pay fees at the headquarters. There are detailed ecological and historical displays at
Lodoare and a gift shop sells snacks, crafts, books and maps, including the excellent Maco
map. There's an NBC ATM at headquarters that accepts Visa and MasterCard, but it some-
times goes offline.
