In-Depth Information
When leaving Arusha, the best thing to do is book your ticket the day before, so that in the
morning when you arrive with your luggage you can get straight on your bus. For predawn
buses, take a taxi to the station and ask the driver to drop you directly at your bus.
Despite what you may hear, there are no luggage fees (unless you have an extraordinarily
large pack).
DAR ES SALAAM
The best (all four-across seating and relatively new air-conditioned buses) companies to/
from Dar es Salaam (eight-10 hours) include the following. If you take an early departure,
with luck you might be able to catch the last ferry to Zanzibar. Super luxury means there's
a toilet on board.
Generally the best company, Dar Express has five luxury (Tsh25,000) and three full luxury
(Tsh30,000) buses departing Makao Mapya bus station from 5.50am to 9am. Metro Express
(luxury/full luxury Tsh25,000/32,000) and Ngorika (luxury Tsh28,000) also have morn-
ing departures from Makao Mapya, while Kilimanjaro Express has four buses, one luxury
(Tsh28,000) from its own stand on Col Middleton Rd.
Three generally less reliable companies, Fresh Coach, Happy Nation and Kirumoi have
luxury (Tsh25,000) departures in the early morning from the central bus station. Ordinary
buses (Tsh18,000) depart 5.30am to 11am.
The last departure of the day to Dar es Salaam is the non-air-conditioned Akamba bus
(Tsh25,000) that arrives from Nairobi around noon at its own office north of the city centre.
MOSHI
Buses and minibuses run between Arusha and Moshi (about Tsh2500, 1½ hours) up to 8pm.
It's pricier (US$10) but more comfortable to take one of the Arusha-Nairobi shuttles ( Click
here .
LUSHOTO
Chikito and Fasaha buses (Tsh12,000 to Tsh13,000, six hours) depart daily at 6am and
6.45am respectively. However, it's more comfortable overall and often works out just as
fast (although more expensively) to take an express bus heading for Dar as far as Mombo,
and then get local transport from there to Lushoto.
TANGA
There are buses (Tsh14,500, seven hours) from the central bus station between 6am and
noon. With four-across seating, Frey's is the best company. Otherwise, take any Dar es Sa-
laam bus and transfer at Segera junction, though this can entail a rather lengthy wait.
