twin-bedded rooms and hot-water showers in a two- storey compound overlooking tiny
gardens. It's in the town centre near the Telecom building and just behind Tumaini Res-
taurant ( 027-264 0027; Main Rd; meals from Tsh6000; breakfast, lunch & dinner)
, which has banana milkshakes and well-prepared continental fare. Just behind, and under
the same management, is Makuti African Restaurant (meals Tsh2000) , with good local
food.
Lawn's Hotel HOTEL $

s/d US$40/50, d bungalow US$45; ) This Lushoto institution is faded but full of
charm, with vine-covered buildings surrounded by extensive gardens, spacious, musty
rooms with dark-wood floors and fireplaces, and in need of a shake-out, plus some newer
doubles and bungalows, a small library, a bar and restaurant. It's at the southern end of
town and signposted; go left at the small traffic circle at the entrance to town, following the
unpaved road up and around through the pine trees to the main entrance.
Kakakuona HOTEL $

behind the post office, Kakakuona has clean, very good-value rooms with hot water and
TV, and a nice terrace restaurant overlooking the valley.
Lushoto Executive Lodge LODGE $$

90,000; ) This lodge is about 3km from the town centre in a lovely, forested setting, with
a small pond, large grounds, restaurant and rooms. At the small traffic circle at the entrance
to town, take the right fork (leading uphill towards Migambo), and follow the well-sign-
posted route to the main gate.
Lushoto Highland Park HOTEL $

40/50; ) Just uphill from the post office, and just below the old District Commissioner's
residence, this good-value place has well-appointed rooms, some with balcony and all with
TV, and a restaurant.
