19th-century gravestones. Fifteenth-century pottery fragments have also been found on the
island, indicating that it may have been settled during the Shirazi era. The island's appar-
ently long history ended in the late 19th century, when its inhabitants moved to the main-
land. Its ruins are less accessible and less atmospheric than those at nearby Tongoni, but
it's worth a look if you have extra time. There are fishing boats on the western side of the
harbour that can take you over. Better, organise an excursion through the tourist informa-
tion office.

Tsh2500) This place has a small, clean beach, showers and a restaurant-bar area overlook-
ing the water (meals and drinks are purchased using a prepaid coupon system). It's a pleas-
ant place to relax and, especially on weekend afternoons, it's a good spot to meet resident
expats and get the lowdown on what's happening in town.

door restaurant. It's in a quiet residential area about 3km from the town centre (Tsh7000 in
a taxi from the bus stand). Take Hospital Rd east to Ras Kazone and follow the signposts.
Rooms vary in size, so check a few.
