suming place has accommodation in straightforward, recently renovated cottages set just
back from the beach, and a restaurant.
Beach Crab Resort BACKPACKERS $

has camping and tents just in from the beach, and no-frills self-contained bungalows with
hot water on a hill just behind. There are clean ablution blocks for campers and guests stay-
ing in the permanent tents, and a beachside bar-restaurant. Follow signs to the Tides and
continue 1.2km further south. Pick-ups can be arranged from Mwera (about 7km away and
along the bus route from Tanga to Mkwaja village near Saadani) and from Pangani.
Emayani Beach Lodge LODGE $$

On the beach about 2km north of the Tides, Emayani has a row of rustic bungalows strung
out along a fine stretch of sand. All are made entirely of thatching and all are very open (no
locks), except for thatch shades that you can pull down in the evening. Kayaks and wind-
surfing equipment are available to rent.
Drifters BACKPACKERS $

chalets US$50/90, family chalet US$120) This backpackers just south of Tulia Beach
Lodge has a dorm, poorly ventilated bandas, some better chalets and a 'family chalet' with
three doubles and a single bed. Everything is very basic, and there's a restaurant-bar and a
chilled vibe.
INFORMATION
The closest banks and ATMs are in Tanga. Staff at the Pangani Cultural Tourism Pro-
gram office ( 8am-5pm), in the yellow building at the bus stand, organise town tours
(per person US$10), river cruises (US$60 for up to three people) and excursions to Maziwe
Marine Reserve and other local attractions.
All of the hotels south of Pangani also organise Maziwe trips.
Kasa Divers ( www.kasa-divers.com ) , on Ushongo beach between Emayani and Tulia
Beach hotels, has diving instruction and snorkelling excursions to Maziwe.
