Kisampa LODGE $$$
( 0756-316815, 0753-005442 ; www.sanctuarytz.com ; s/d full board US$356/570) Set
off on its own in a private nature reserve bordering Saadani park, this family-friendly place
has made impressive progress in promoting conservation of the surrounding Zaraninge
Forest and supporting community development. Village fees paid by each guest support
health, education and other local initiatives. Accommodation is in a handful of wonderful
bungalows that are completely open if you are inside, looking out, but otherwise very
private. Kisampa is inland (the coast is about an hour's drive away), but excursions to
the coast, and into the park, can be arranged. With your own vehicle, you can drive from
Bagamoyo to the Wami River, where there's a guarded car park and a canoe to the other
side. Kisampa staff will meet you and take you the remaining short distance to the camp.
Park camp sites (camping adult/child US$20/5) include those on the beach north of
Saadani Safari Lodge and along the Wami River at Kinyonga. You'll need to be completely
self-sufficient. There are also the new Tanapa resthouse & bandas ( 0785-555135,
0754-730112, 0787-336612; saadani@tanzaniaparks.com; per person in bandas/resthouse
US$40/50) near Saadani village. The resthouse has three comfortable singles and a VIP
suite; the bandas have twin-bedded rooms. There's a small self-catering kitchen in the res-
thouse, and one is under construction for the bandas . Bring your own food and drink for
both.
In Saadani village, the unmissable Saadani River Park (r Tsh15,000) has clean, no-frills
rooms with bucket showers.
INFORMATION
Park entry costs US$20/5 per day per adult/child aged five to 15 years, guides cost US$10
per day and there's a US$20 per person fee for both walking and boat safaris. Camping
costs US$30/10 per adult/child. All fees are currently payable in cash only, but a Visa card
system similar to that in use at other parks will soon be implemented. Park headquarters
(saadani@tanzaniaparks.com; 8am-4pm) are at Mkwaja, at the park's northern edge,
and near Madete Gate. The main entry for visitors from Dar es Salaam is Mvave Gate (
