EAST NUNGWI
Mnarani Beach Cottages LODGE $$
( 024-224 0494, 0777-415551; www.lighthousezanzibar.com ; east Nungwi; s
US$78-90, d US$120-200, tr US$195-225, all prices include half-board; ) Mn-
arani Beach Cottages is the first place you come to on the placid eastern side of Nungwi,
just after the lighthouse (the name means 'at the lighthouse' in Swahili). It's set on a small
rise overlooking the sea, with easy access to the beach below. The beach itself is a narrow,
walkable strip at low tide, which disappears at high tide. Accommodation is in small, spot-
less cottages, larger family rooms, the two-storey Zanzibar House or a more private honey-
moon cottage. Mnarani is well suited for both couples and families, and with a surprising
feeling of space despite the closely spaced rooms and the fact that it is often fully booked.
Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel HOTEL $$$
( 024-223 3767; www.rasnungwi.com ; east Nungwi; s/d full board from US$240/280;
Jun-Mar; ) This cosy, upmarket place has long been a standout in Nungwi, with
a low-key ambience, airy sea-view chalets nestled on a hillside overlooking the sea, and
less expensive 'garden-view' rooms in the main lodge. The hotel can organise fishing and
water sports, and there's a dive centre. It's the last (for now) hotel down on Nungwi's east-
ern side, and has managed to retain its quiet charm, despite the flurry of building activity
elsewhere in the north.
Game Fish Lodge LODGE $$
( 0753-451919; gamefish@zanlink.com; east Nungwi; d US$120) This South Afric-
an-owned angler's hideaway is in a good setting high on a hill dotted with fig palms and
overlooking the sea on Nungwi's quiet eastern side. The four rooms are comfortable, and
there is fully equipped fishing and a restaurant.
Sazani Beach Hotel BUNGALOW $$
( 024-224 0014; www.sazanibeach.com ; s/d/tr US$70/120/150; ) Sazani is a quiet,
quirky place with 10 agreeably rustic cottages on a somewhat overgrown hillside overlook-
ing the sea. It's on the eastern side of Nungwi, past Mnarani Beach cottages. The area im-
mediately in front is popular for kitesurfing.
