GETTING THERE & AWAY
Dalla-dallas to Kisarawe (marked either Kisarawe or Chanika) leave from the New Posta
dalla-dalla stand, and from Libya St in Kariakoo. You can also get them on Nyerere Rd at
the airport turn-off. For Pugu Hills Nature Centre, ask the driver to drop you at the Pugu
Kajiungeni petrol station (located about 7km before Kisarawe, and about 12km past the air-
port). Continue straight along the Kisarawe road for about 200m, to the end of a tiny group
of shops on your left, where there's a dirt path leading up to Pugu Hills (about 15 minutes
further on foot); ask for Bwana Kiki's place. By vehicle, from the Pugu Kajiungeni petrol
station, follow the sealed road to the left to Chanika, continue about 800m, then turn right
at an unmarked dirt path; look for the blue-roofed house at the turn-off, and don't cross the
railroad tracks. After 300m take the dirt road to the right. Continue for 1km; you'll see the
forest ahead. There's a bamboo gate (open it yourself); continue about 100m to the Pugu
Hills Gate, where you should honk to call the gatekeeper. If you're coming from Chalinze,
contact Pugu Hills Nature Centre for a short cut to avoid city traffic.
Offshore Islands
The uninhabited islands of Bongoyo, Mbudya, Pangavini and Fungu Yasini, just off the
coastline north of Dar es Salaam, were gazetted in 1975 as part of the Dar es Salaam Marine
