ferry, it may be worth paying extra for the VIP section to avoid being awash in the seasick-
ness of your fellow passengers on the deck, although the fresh air is arguably better than
the air-con of VIP.
Bus
Except as noted, all buses depart from and arrive at the main bus station at Ubungo, 8km
west of the city centre on Morogoro Rd. It's a sprawling place with the usual assortment
of bus station hustle and touts. Keep an eye on your luggage and your wallet and try to
avoid arriving at night. Ask your taxi driver to take you directly to the ticket office window
for the line you want to travel with. Avoid dealing with the touts. Dalla-dallas to Ubungo
(Tsh300) leave from New Posta and Old Posta transport stands, as well as from various
other spots in town. Taxis from the city centre cost from Tsh10,000. If you're coming into
Dar es Salaam on Dar Express, you can usually stay on the bus past Ubungo until the bus
line's town office, which is worth doing as it will be less chaotic and you'll have a cheaper
taxi fare to your hotel. This doesn't work out leaving the city, since departures are direc-
tly from Ubungo. Tickets can be booked at Ubungo, and, for Dar Express, at its office on
Libya St. Only buy tickets inside the bus office itself.
Dar Express (Libya St, Kisutu) Daily buses to Arusha (Tsh25,000-30,000) departing every
30 to 60 minutes from 6am to 10am from Ubungo bus station.
