tinuing on to Pemba. For ferry connections to Pemba, Click here .
TO/FROM ZANZIBAR
There are 'fast' ferry trips (on Kilimanjaro I and II and Sea Bus ) daily between Dar es Sa-
laam and Zanzibar, departing at 7am, 9.30am, 12.30pm and 3.45pm. All take about two
hours and cost US$35/40 regular/VIP (VIP gets you a seat in the air-con hold). There are
also several slow ferries. The main one is Flying Horse, which departs daily at 12.30pm
(one way US$25) and takes almost four hours.
Ferry departures from Zanzibar are daily at 7am , 9.30am , 12.30pm , 3.30pm (all 'fast' fer-
ries) and 10pm ( Flying Horse, arriving before dawn the next day).
The only place at the Dar es Salaam ferry port to buy legitimate tickets is the tall blue-
glass building at the southern end of the ferry terminal area on Kivukoni Front opposite St
Joseph's Cathedral. The building is marked 'Azam Marine - Coastal Fast Ferries', and has
official ticket offices and a large waiting area inside. Avoid the smaller offices just to the
north of this building. Don't fall for touts at the harbour trying to collect extra fees for 'doc-
tors' certificates', departure taxes and the like. The only fee is the ticket price (which in-
cludes the US$5 port tax). Also, avoid touts who want to take you into town to buy 'cheap-
er' ferry tickets, or who offer to purchase ferry tickets for you at less expensive resident
rates; although it's easy enough to get resident-rate tickets and get on the boat with them,
you're likely to have problems later when the tout or his buddies come around to collect
payment for the favour. Depending on season, the ferry crossing can be choppy, and most
lines pass out sea sickness bags at the start of each trip. If you're travelling with the night
