Mwenge Carvers' Market ARTS & CRAFTS
(off ; Sam Nujoma Rd; 8am-6pm) This market, opposite the Village Museum, and just
off New Bagamoyo Rd, is packed with vendors, and you can watch carvers at work. Take
the Mwenge dalla-dalla from New Posta transport stand to the end of the route, from where
it's five minutes on foot down the small street to the left. The best way to visit Mwenge is
with Investours ( Click here ) .
Tingatinga Centre ARTS & CRAFTS
( www.tingatinga.org ; Morogoro Stores, Haile Selassie Rd, Oyster Bay; 8.30am-5pm)
This centre is at the spot where Edward Saidi Tingatinga ( Click here ) originally marketed
his designs, and it's still one of the best places to buy Tingatinga paintings and watch the
artists at work.
Makutano Centre for Tanzanian Art & Craft ARTS & CRAFTS
(Makutano House; Click here ; 0784-782770, 0684-006840; www.makutanotz.com ;
Katoke Rd; 9.30am-6.30pm Mon-Sat, 10am-4pm Sun) Makutano promotes local arts
and crafts, holds regular exhibitions and has crafts for sale. There's also the good Black
Tomato cafe on the premises with breakfasts and sandwiches. It's just off Chole Rd.
Msasani Slipway Weekend Craft Market ARTS & CRAFTS
(Msasani Slipway, Msasani Peninsula; Sat & Sun) Prices are slightly higher here than
elsewhere in town, but quality is good and the atmosphere calm. There's also a selection of
Tingatinga-style paintings.
Nyumba ya Sanaa ARTS & CRAFTS
( 0754-271263; info@swahilicourses.com; Old Bagamoyo Rd, Msasani) This local
artists cooperative sells reasonably priced textiles and crafts. It's just down from the US
embassy, and opposite Oyster Bay police station.
