In-Depth Information
1897. The small, white, domed building just before is where Robert Koch carried out his
pioneering research on malaria and tuberculosis around the turn of the 20th century.
Head south along Luthuli St. Left is the State House , originally built by the Ger-
mans and then rebuilt after WWI by the British. Just southeast on the seafront is the
fish market .
From the fish market, head westwards along Kivukoni Front (Azania Front). To the
right are government buildings , including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry
of Justice and the Bureau of Statistics, all dating from the German era. Left is the seafront,
with its boats and vendors. Continue straight to the old
Kilimanjaro Hotel (now Hyatt
Regency Dar es Salaam).
Just beyond is Azania Front Lutheran Church , with its landmark red-roofed bel-
fry. The church was built at the turn of the 20th century by German missionaries and is
still used for services. Continuing along the waterfront are, first, the Old Post Office
and, then, the White Fathers' Mission House , one of the city's oldest buildings. One
block beyond this is St Joseph's Cathedral , another landmark. The cathedral was
built at the same time as the Lutheran church, also by German missionaries, and still con-
tains many original German inscriptions and some artwork, including the carved relief
above the main altar. From St Joseph's, head one block north along Bridge St to Samora
Ave. Follow this eastwards, back to Askari monument.

SLEEPING
If you're relying on public transport, it's cheaper and more convenient to stay in the city
centre, which is also where most budget lodging is located. If you don't mind paying for
taxis, or travelling the distance from the airport (about 20km), the hotels on Msasani Pen-
insula and the other northern suburbs can be a break from the urban bustle. To avoid the
city entirely, head for the beaches north or south of Dar es Salaam ( Click here ). The closest
