DAR'S MARKETS
For a gentle initiation into Dar es Salaam's markets, head to the fish market
(Ocean Rd) , near Kivukoni Front. It's fairly calm as urban markets go, and full
of colour, and you can watch the daily fish auctions. Don't bring valuables and
watch out for pickpockets. For Western-style shopping, try Msasani Slipway
(Msasani Peninsula) or Sea Cliff Village (Toure Dr) , both at the northern end
of Msasani Peninsula, or Shopper's Plaza (Old Bagamoyo Rd). For kangas
(printed cotton wraparounds worn by many Tanzanian women) and other tex-
tiles, try the vendors and wholesale shops in the Mnazi Moja area on Uhuru St .
Swimming SWIMMING
There's swimming at Golden Tulip (Tour Dr; per person Tsh20,000), just south of Sea Cliff
Village; at Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel (per adult/child Tsh20,000/10,000) (see Sleep-
ing); and, in the small pool at Mbalamwezi Beach Club (per adult/child Tsh4000/2000)
(see Drinking).
