regions at a glance
Before delving into some of the best landscapes, wildlife watching and cultural experiences
on the continent, remember that together these countries make up a huge area, and even
crossing between them overland requires careful planning. Chobe National Park and the
Okavango Delta in Botswana are the two big wildlife regions, along with Etosha National
Park in Namibia's north. Incredible landscapes just seem to pop up, but Namibia's north
and the Kalahari are the stuff of legend, providing desertscapes, foggy coastline and flat-
topped granite monoliths. Culturally, central Namibia delivers on German heritage while
the north is the home of the Himba people. Both countries offer access to some of the best
galleries of San rock art in Africa while the capitals, Windhoek and Gaborone, provide op-
portunities to delve deeper into the cultural fabric of the region.

CITY PARKS
The nearby Mokolodi Nature Reserve (a few retired predators) and in-town Gaborone
Game Reserve (herbivores and good bird-watching only) is the best Gaborone can muster.
But the Department of Wildlife and National Parks office (for paying park fees and book-
ing some campsites) may make Gaborone an important stop.
