the main hub for connecting flights to other African cities.
Return flights from Jo'burg to Windhoek are generally a few hundred dollars, although
if you book your internal flight at the same time as your main flight, you'll always get a
better deal. Note that the airport departure tax for international flights is included in the
cost of your plane ticket.
For North American travellers, it's worth checking the price of a flight via Frankfurt, as
this may be cheaper than a direct flight to South Africa.
Round-the-world tickets can work out cheaper than return tickets for travellers from
Australia and New Zealand. The most common African stop is Jo'burg.
Book well in advance for flights from the following neighbouring countries:
Botswana Air Namibia runs several flights a week between Windhoek and Maun.
Zambia You will need to transit through Jo'burg for flights to Lusaka or Livingstone.
Zimbabwe Air Namibia flies to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) a few times a week.
Windhoek's in-town Eros Airport (ERS; 061-299 6500) is mainly for small charter
flights, although Air Namibia also runs flights to Katima Mulilo, Ondangwa and Walvis

Land
Thanks to the Southern African Customs Union, you can drive through Namibia, Bot-
swana, South Africa and Swaziland with a minimum of ado. To travel further north re-
quires a carnet de passage, which can amount to heavy expenditure.
If you're driving a hire car into Namibia you will need to present a letter of permission
from the hire company saying the car is allowed to cross the border.
BORDER CROSSINGS
Namibia has a well-developed road network with easy access from neighbouring coun-
tries. The main border crossings into Namibia are as follows:
Angola Oshikango, Ruacana, Rundu
Botswana Buitepos, Mahango and Mpalila Island
South Africa Noordoewer, Ariamsvlei
