The South Coast
The south coast of Namibia is dominated by Sperrgebiet (Forbidden Area), which plays
host to the country's highly lucrative and highly secure diamond mining efforts. Although
much of the park has yet to open up, the town of Lüderitz, which is rich in German colo-
nial architecture and occupies an otherworldly setting between the dunes and sea, is a
pleasant place to spend a few days.

A stop on the long drive west to Lüderitz, Aus is the home to a former prison camp and,
aside from the prison camp, also boasts two highly recommendable guest farms where
you can slow down and spend some time soaking up the desolate beauty of the shifting
sands.

just off the B4 has a cafe, internet and lots of information on nature, war and wild horses
of the area. Ask here about the Aus Walking Trail which begins at the info centre.
