Getting There & Away
Air Namibia ( Click here ) has around seven flights a week between Windhoek's Eros Air-
port and Walvis Bay's Rooikop Airport, located 10km southeast of town on the C14.
All buses and combis to Walvis Bay run via Swakopmund. The Intercape Mainliner
stop is the Spur Restaurant - Ben Gurirab St. There are also other private bus services
running between Windhoek and Walvis Bay.
Hitching isn't difficult between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, but weather conditions
can be rough if heading for Namib-Naukluft Park or the Skeleton Coast.
Namib-Naukluft Park & Sossusvlei
This is desert country and the swirling sand dunes here are one of the highlights of a visit
to Namibia. Nowhere else in the country defines Namibia so much as the much-photo-
graphed dunes: silent, constantly shifting and ageless.
The present boundaries of Namib-Naukluft Park, one of the world's largest national
parks, were mostly established in 1978 by merging the Namib Desert Park and the
Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park with parts of Diamond Area 1 and bits of surrounding gov-
ernment land. However, the park's northern border was adjusted in December 2010 with
the establishment of Dorob National Park (formerly the National West Coast Tourist
Recreation Area), which stretches south as far as Sandwich Harbour.
The Namib-Naukluft Park takes in around 23,000 sq km of arid and semi-arid land, and
protects various areas of vast ecological importance in the Namib and the Naukluft. The
park also abuts the NamibRand Nature Reserve, the largest privately owned property in
Southern Africa, forming a massive wildlife corridor that promotes migratory movement.
NAMIB SECTION
While most people associate the Namib solely with Sossusvlei, the desert sweeps across
most of Central Namibia, and is characterised by a large array of geological formations.
