The Salt Works
Southwest of the lagoon is this 3500-hectare saltpan complex, which currently supplies over
90% of South Africa's salt. As with the one in Swakopmund, these pans concentrate salt from seawater with the
aid of evaporation. They also act as a rich feeding ground for prawns and larval fish.

Immediately east of town along the C14 at the municipal sewage
purification works is this nature sanctuary, which consists of a series of shallow artificial pools, fringed by reeds.
An observation tower and a short nature walk afford excellent birdwatching.
MUSEUM
Walvis Bay Museum
(Nangolo Mbumba Dr; 9am-5pm Mon-Thu, closes 4.30pm Fri)
The town museum is
located in the library. It concentrates on the history and maritime background of Walvis
Bay, but also has archaeological exhibits, a mineral collection and natural history displays
on the Namib Desert and the Atlantic Coast.

Sandwich Harbour
(N$850)
Sandwich Harbour, located 56km south of Walvis Bay in Dorob National Park,
historically served as a commercial fishing and trading port. Some historians suggest that
the name may be derived from an English whaler, the
Sandwich,
whose captain produced
the first map of this coastline. Others contend that the name may also be a corruption of
the German word
sandfische,
a type of shark often found here. History aside, at present
the harbour is a total wilderness devoid of any human settlement.
Dunes up to 100m high slope into the Atlantic which washes into the picturesque la-
