Twyfelfontein Country Lodge $$$

from Twyfelfontein, this architectural wonder is embedded in the red rock. On your way
in, be sure not to miss the ancient rock engravings, as well as the swimming pool with its
incongruous desert waterfall. The lodge boasts stylish rooms, an immense and airy elev-
ated dining room, and a good variety of excursions throughout Damaraland. It's very close
to Twyfelfontein and the rock art, fairly well signposted and easy to find.

There's little to prepare you for this beautiful lodge - its domed buildings seem to disap-
pear into the landscape and you don't see it until you're there. The main buildings all en-
joy an ingenious natural air-conditioning system, and the accommodation nestles out of
sight amid the boulders. The mountain camp is located 5km north of the Twyfelfontein
turn-off from the D2612.

Getting There & Away
There's no public transport in the area and little traffic. Turn off the C39, 73km west of
Khorixas, turn south on the D3254 and continue 15km to a right turning signposted Twy-
felfontein. It's 5km to the petroglyph site.

Flanked by lovely low rock formations, tiny Kamanjab functions as a minor service centre
for northern Damaraland, and serves as an appealing stopover en route between Damara-
land and Kaokoveld. Kamanjab's scenic hinterland also supports a pair of wonderful
lodges that are in the business of protecting Namibia's population of feline predators.

Otjitotongwe Cheetah Lodge $$$
( 687056; s/d with full board N$990/1830; ) Otjitotongwe is run by cheetah afi-
cionados Tollie and Roeleen Nel, who keep tame cheetahs around their home and have set
up a 40-hectare enclosure for wilder specimens, which they feed every afternoon. The
project started when the Nels trapped several wild cheetahs that were poaching their live-
stock, in the hopes of releasing them in Etosha National Park. After learning that the gov-
