MABUASEHUBE SECTION
The Mabuasehube section of the park covers 1800 sq km, and focuses on the low red
dunes around three major and several minor salt-pan complexes. The largest, Mabuase-
hube Pan, is used as a salt lick by migrating herds in late winter and early spring.
TWO RIVERS SECTION
Although you can now reach the Two Rivers section from either Kaa or Mabuasehube, ac-
cess is still easiest from South Africa. The pools of rainwater that collect in the dry river-
beds of the Auob and Nossob Rivers provide the best opportunities for wildlife viewing in
the park.
KALAHARI GEMSBOK NATIONAL PARK (SOUTH AFRICA)
This section is characterised by a semidesert landscape of Kalahari dunes, camelthorn-
dotted grasslands and the dry beds of the Auob and Nossob Rivers. One advantage of vis-
iting this side of the park is that many roads are accessible by 2WD.
Activities
There are several challenging wilderness tracks through this remote corner of Botswana.
The Nossob Eco Trail is a four-day hike, entirely self-catered, that stops at basic camp-
sites along the way. Hand-held radios are provided for the journey, which requires a min-
imum of two and a maximum of five vehicles. The cost per vehicle (maximum five occu-
pants) is R1730. You must prebook through the DWNP ( Click here ) in Gaborone.
The Swartbas Wilderness Trail ( 054-561 2000) is a two-day hiking track with ba-
sic camping facilities accessible by sturdy 4WD. It is closed from April to November.
Sleeping
All campsites in the Botswana sections of the park must be booked in advance through the
DWNP ( 381 0774; dwnp@gov.bw; camping per person P30) .
Bookings for huts and chalets on the South African side are recommended from June to
September and during all weekends and public and school holidays. Contact the National
Parks Board ( South Africa 012-428 9111; www.sanparks.org ) .
