In-Depth Information
forest retreat, which consists of eight ochre-washed chalets surrounded by thick bush and
towering trees. Dinner is served by candlelight and lantern in the main adobe-walled com-
pound, while the night's festivities revolve around a campfire in a scenic clearing next to
the water.
Getting There & Away
If you're either on a mokoro day trip or a multiday bush-camping expedition from Maun,
you will be transported to/from the Eastern Delta by 4WD. Transport into the lodges is
usually via charter flights (enquire with your lodge) and then mokoro or 4WD.
UNUSUAL DELTA MAMMALS
In the northeast corner of the delta, watch out for rare sitatungas - splay-hoofed swamp antelopes, which are par-
ticularly adept at manoeuvring over soft, saturated mud and soggy, mashed vegetation. When frightened, they
submerge like hippos, leaving only their tiny nostrils above the surface.
Red lechwes, of which there are estimated to be between 30,000 and 60,000, are easily distinguished by their
large rumps. In the shallow and still pools of the palm islands, reedbucks wade and graze on water plants, and the
islands are also inhabited by large herds of impala.
Inner Delta
Welcome to the heart of the Okavango, a world inaccessible by roads and inhabited by
some of the richest wildlife concentrations on earth. Although budget trips are possible in
some areas, the quintessential delta experience is staying in one of the fly-in luxury lodges
- if you're going to make a splash with your money in Botswana, make it here.
Roughly defined, the Inner Delta occupies the areas west of Chief's Island and between
Chief's Island and the base of the Okavango Panhandle. Mokoro trips through the Inner
Delta are almost invariably arranged with licensed polers affiliated with specific lodges,
and operate roughly between June and December, depending on water levels. To see the
most wildlife, you will have to pay park fees to land on Chief's Island or other parts of
Moremi Game Reserve. Also, be sure to advise the poler if you'd like to break the trip
with bushwalks around the palm islands.
