you'd expect at this price. It's certainly a comfortable option, though it's lacking in per-
sonality and atmosphere, especially if you're coming from (or going to) any of the luxury
lodges in the delta.
Cresta Riley's Hotel $$$

) Riley's is the only hotel or lodge in central Maun and it has a long pedigree - this
place has been here since before tourists began arriving, although it's barely recognisable
these days, even more so since the Cresta chain made it one of its landmark properties. It
offers comfortable rooms in a convenient setting in leafy grounds - just don't expect a
lodge/wilderness experience.

Thamalakane Lodge $$$
( 7250 6184; http://thamalakane.com ; Shorobe Rd; chalets P1397-1929; )
With a beautiful setting on a sun-drenched curve of the Thamalakane River, overlooking
wading hippos and waving reeds, Thamalakane wins in the location, location, location
stakes. But it's also got beautiful little chalets built of stone, stuffed with modern amenit-
ies and dressed up in safari-chic tones, and a kitchen cranking out some of the best food in
Maun. The lodge is around 19km northeast of Maun off the road to Shorobe.

Royal Tree Lodge $$$

( 680 0757; http://royaltreelodge.com ; per person low season full board US$262, s/d
high season from US$395/610; ) This private farm-reserve, about 13km west of
the airport, is a lovely luxury option that maintains a good crew of regular visitors. These
returnees are probably impressed by the resident wandering giraffes, kudus and ostriches,
the large, beautifully decked-out private cabins, and the utter sense of calm and quiet here
far away from Maun's bustle.

Eating & Drinking
Maun is not one of the culinary capitals of the world. That's not to say you can't get a de-
cent meal - many of the camps have accomplished kitchens, particularly the Island Safari
Lodge, Audi Camp and Thamalakane Lodge are all excellent. Away from the camps and
lodges, good restaurants in the city centre are pretty thin on the ground. Otherwise, Maun
has versions of every peri-peri- obsessed fast-food chain in Southern Africa.
