How Ancient Man Found Honey
Before man domesticated bees, bee lining was an attempt at locating a feral
bee nest to hive or just some wild honey as a sweet treat by following for-
agers back to their home. Today, this ancient practice, also called bee hunt-
ing, is still a fun activity for a nice day with fellow beekeepers. I joined one
hunt while attending a beekeeping gathering.
Youbeginbylocatingafewhoneybeesataflowerpatchorwateringhole.
Then the goal is to try to lure them with some sugar syrup into a box. Once
they are in the box, you mark each bee with a color dot on her back, similar
to the way you would mark the queen of a hive. Honeybees will naturally
return to their hive once they have filled up on sugar syrup and recruit other
foragers to the source. After the bees have been marked and have filled up
onsugar,youcanreleaseeachbeeatdifferentareasandwatchastheyreturn
to their hive. The direction in which the bees fly will determine the general
locationoftheirwildnest.Ifyousuccessfullyfindtheirnest,youcanbesure
by spotting the marked bees. If the sun is at an angle, such as in the early
morning or late afternoon, it will reflect on to the departing bees, making it
