In-Depth Information
In the following Figure, a magazine photograph has been 'shattered' using simple, regular
diagonal strokes. However, the technique can be applied in a number of different ways:
Diagonally, horizontally, vertically, or in a circular or freeform manner;
Varying the alignment between 'shattered' areas;
Gaps or no gaps between the cuts;
The addition of another photograph or colour as a contrasting visual ele-
ment;
Regular or irregular, thick or thin cuts. 54
Figure 69. Applying 'shatter' to an existing image.
This technique imbues an image or photograph with an edgy, experimental and avant-garde
connotation and variations of 'shatter' are often used in graphic design as per the following
Karl Lagerfeld advertisement (2012) and page layout, Esquire magazine (2010).
