Figure 65. Embellished and simplified colour in visual imagery.
A version of reverse embellishment features in the film and poster for Schindler's List
(1993) wherein a key feature is the young girl's red coat. Similarly, the film Sin City (2005)
is predominantly a black and white film; however, some characters and events are featured
in saturated colour. This treatment also features in the poster for Sin City .

Digital filters
This technique uses digital filters to create varying levels of abstraction. Software and ap-
plications such as Photoshop and Instagram provide access to digital filters, which enable
the partial or full abstraction of visual imagery and designs. These applications allow for
the modification of line, colour, shape and texture.
In the following Figure, an original photograph was modified to create an abstracted ver-
sion which was then incorporated by Ron Baumann into a poster design. Using digital fil-
ters in Photoshop, the original photograph was reduced to a black and white version; con-
trast was increased to create a starker, more abstract version of the photograph to suit the
communication objectives of the poster.
