Compositional techniques
This principle relates to the arrangement and proportional placement of various elements
such as shapes and lines within the image/design boundary.
The 'golden mean' and 'rule of thirds'
The 'golden mean' proportion has been used since antiquity as a compositional device in
art, sculpture and architecture. 34 It provides an underlying framework within which to ar-
range design elements and occurs in a range of contexts including the Parthenon, the Taj
Mahal and Leonard Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. 48 It is likely that, given its long-term existence,
the golden mean proportion has become highly familiar.

As a compositional device, the 'golden mean' provides a useful framework for visual ele-
ments and helps to create visual cohesion. The 'golden mean' proportions are evident in the
posters for The Green Hornet 3D (2011) and Shutter Island (2010).
