Rhythm - Movement
Rhythm is the sense of movement, excitement or vitality that the presence of repeated design
elements such as lines, shapes, textures or text can add to a design. The absence of repeated
design elements contributes to a sense of stillness, peace and tranquillity. For example, the
repeated jagged shapes and diagonal direction in the poster for The War of the Worlds (1953)
creates a sense of visual excitement and movement. Similarly, the repetition of shape in the
poster for Skyfall (2012) conveys a sense of movement and action, contrasting with the rel-
ative stillness of the central figure.
Figure 47. Repetition of elements contributes to a sense of movement.
The lack of repeated elements in the poster for The Way (2010) suggests calm and solitude
as does the simple placement of lone elements in the poster for Gravity (2013).
