Down (2012) and Downloaded (2012) are visually interesting but complex, forcing the
reader to carefully examine the posters to identify film title and relevant credits.
Figure 42. Complexity in film posters.
In the 1960s, visual communications design evident in film/event posters and album covers
frequently featured high levels of visual complexity as well as psychedelic colours. The
combination of visual complexity and psychedelic colour was used strategically to target
a particular audience and also to act as a communication barrier to those in the 'Establish-
ment', a social group considered antithetical to the hippie community. Posters such as those
designed by Wes Wilson for the Fillmore Auditorium are typical of graphic design of this
era.
