Texture
Texture exists in a huge range of variations and is often used to convey atmosphere, ambi-
ence and to convey connotative meaning linked to communication objectives.
The poster for The Iron Lady (2011) features a sideways silhouette of the British Houses of
Parliament scraping across the left side of Margaret Thatcher's face. This use of texture in-
dicates the film's themes: political power and dementia. Similarly, the poster for Journeys:
Neil Young (2011) features a grainy, aged effect that reflects the 'life as journey' film theme.
Figure 34. Texture as a visual metaphor.
The posters for Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013) and Sin City (2005) use texture to symbol-
ically represent the rough, rugged and gritty nature of post-apocalyptic civilisation.
