In-Depth Information
Size
Variations in the size of elements within an image help to create focal points. Variations in
size can be incorporated through proportional use of differences in shape, line and light-
dark contrast. Variations in size may be manipulated among the elements within an image or
design, or may be manipulated relative to the boundaries of the image or design.
The crowd depicted in darker tones in the poster for Cinderella Man (2005) creates a large
frame around the smaller, central figure. This variation in size and tonal value sets up a
visual metaphor that links to the film's narrative. In the poster for Master and Commander
(2003), the size of the actor's face matches that of the brig, indicating the two key themes of
the film.

The posters for The Next Three Days (2010) and A Beautiful Mind (2001) feature variations
in size via shape and tonal value that convey information about film narrative and character.
