In-Depth Information
Direction
Variations in direction (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, straight, curved and organic) can occur
within elements such as line, form, text, texture and colour, and can be used to create focus
or draw attention to specific areas such as headlines. Direction can also create a sense of
stability or vitality, and to convey indications of narrative and character development.
In the poster for Anchorman: The Legend Continues (2013), direction is used to draw atten-
tion to the film title (overlaid yellow lines); while partially camouflaging a humorous ele-
ment linked to the film's narrative. In the poster for Coherence (2013), shape direction draws
visual attention to the film title plus provides insight into its likely narrative and theme.
Figure 24. Direction: As a device to direct attention and convey insight.
Diagonal direction indicated with yellow lines overlaid on the posters for Abraham Lincoln:
Vampire Hunter (2012) and Oceans 12 (2004) bring a sense of action, vitality and energy.
