The Bauhaus, a key design school of the 20 th century, developed a curriculum that focused
on key visual elements and compositional principles. 8 A landmark institution, the Bauhaus
was established by Walter Gropius in 1919. Gropius had been part of the Deutscher
Werkbund, an association of artists, designers, architects and industrialists founded in 1907
in Munich that aimed to create a partnership to promote competitiveness in German design
and manufacturing. 29 Founding Werkbund members included architect and designer Peter
Behrens, who employed Mies Van Der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and Walter Gropius. When
Gropius resigned from the Bauhaus, Hannes Meyer followed by Van Der Rohe became dir-
ectors until the institution was closed by the Nazis in 1933.
