13.7 Site layout plan and materials management
General site location
The site is located in the centre of a main university campus. Approximately £3 mil-
lion is being expended on external works improvements outside the area of the site
perimeter hoarding. This involves storing expensive paved materials (granite paving
and polished sets etc.) within the main compound area.
The site layout plan indicates an extensive external works area to the south of the
site accommodation which requires to be completed easily within the contract
period.
Site layout plan
The main contractor's compound area contains:
A - Outdoor covered smoking area.
B - Samples and mock panel area.
C - Toilet block on ground floor and clients representative 1 st floor.
D - Main contractors accommodation on upper floor.
Mess, canteen, drying room, induction room and reception on ground floor.
Adjacent area on site contains:
E - Subcontractors offices.
F - Paving and stone storage areas.
G - Waste skip areas.
H - General storage and work area in front of new frame extension.
J - Fire points.
The site layout plan indicates pedestrian access along the north and east sides of the
building. Access for crainage and hydraulic scissor lift platforms is required along all
the elevations to facilitate the fixing of curtain wall support and glazed panels.
The main storage area in front of the new frame extension is to be used firstly, for
the storage of the paving material and later for the glazed curtain wall panels. The
site is located on one of the busiest main roads in Manchester. The site is surrounded
by other university buildings currently occupied by students.
A dedicated site manager is responsible for the materials management. A name
and shame notice board is used to notify subcontracts who do not comply with
the site materials practices laid down by the main contractors.
