9.11 External building features
In order for the building to blend into the Derbyshire landscape, limestone filled
gabions have been introduced into the building elevations. Gabion panels have
been introduced between the main portals on the front elevation of the building.
The gabions have been filled manually with limestone from a scissor lift. Additional
low gabion walls have also been constructed around the factory building.
The whole elevation of the office block is faced with 300 mm wide gabion cages
which are held in position on vertical aluminium support rails. The filling of the gabi-
ons is carried out by hand, from an hydraulic platform, which appears to be an
expensive labour solution to the filling of the gabions.
