9.1 Contents of the case study
Elevation of the completed building
This case study covers the construction and management aspects of the building of
a project in rural Derbyshire. The ten month project was undertaken by a medium
sized local contractor involving thirty five work package subcontractors. The con-
tract was successfully completed within the planned contract period.
The following aspects of the project are outlined:
Client/contractor relationships.
An overview of the contractors head office organisation and the site management
structure.
The contractors approach to the development of a work sequence for the main steel
frame.
An overview of the steelwork and services procurement programme.
A detailed analysis of the sequences involved in erecting the 40 m span portal
frames to the main factory building.
The construction approach taken to the provision of limestone filled gabion wall
panels to various elevations.
9.2 Project overview
The famous “Buxton Water” brand has been established since the early 1800's. The
project involves the building of a new factory/ head office and bottling plant capa-
ble of producing one billion bottles per year.
