specific headings. However, you can find in the labeling all the information
you need to safely and effectively use the product. Figures 2.6A and 2.6B
show workers reading the label prior to use.
A. THE INFORMATION ON THE LABEL
The pesticide label contains basic information that clearly identifies the
product. Some of this information must appear on the front panel. Figure
2.7 shows an example of a label.
1.
Trade Name
The trade name is the producer's or formulator's proprietary name of the
pesticide. Most companies register each brand name as a trademark and will
not allow any other company to use that name. The brand name is usually
the largest print on the front panel of the label. Beware of choosing a product
by trade name alone. Companies often use the same basic name with slight
variations for different products; the products may contain different amounts or
types of active ingredients and will probably be registered for different uses.
Always check the label for the active ingredient(s) in the product and for
registered uses.
2.
Use Classification
All pesticides are evaluated, and if additional care over and above simple
label compliance is required for their safe use, they receive a restricted use
classification. Pesticides classified for restricted use will bear the following
statement on the label:
RESTRICTED USE PESTICIDE
For retail sale and use only by certified applicators or persons under their direct
supervision and only for those uses covered by the certified applicator's
certification.
Some labels state why the product is classified as restricted use.
Examples include:
Very high toxicity to humans and birds
Oncogenicity (cancer causing)
