Thiazoles
This group of fungicides contains a five-membered ring that is cleaved to
form the active fungicidal agent, -N=C=S, or a dithiocarbamate, depending
upon the structure of the parent compound. Etridiazole is a soil fungicide
which has been shown to undergo the ring cleavage mentioned above.
Mode of Action
The probable mode of action is the inhibition of respiration and mito-
chondrial destruction.
Toxicity
The formulation of the active ingredient is important to its toxicity.
Emulsifiable concentrates (Turban EC) are designated to Toxicity Category I
and have the signal word “Danger” on the label. Several wettable powder for-
mulations are in Toxicity Category II and have the signal word “Warning” on
the label and, in general, granulated formulations are in Toxicity Category III
and have the signal word “Caution” on the label.
The importance of the inert ingredience in the above formulations is evi-
dent. The end-user of the product should be aware of the toxicity of these in-
gredients.
