Horse Riding
Devon and Cornwall help riders achieve that dream of cantering across open countryside.
Diverse environments include dappled bridleways, spectacular moorland or the ride-
through-the-surf beloved of films.
Although you can't ride horses on public footpaths, you can trot on the vast network of
bridleways - Exmoor ( Click here ) alone has 400 miles of them. Much of the common land
on Dartmoor ( Click here ) is open to horse riders, as are some of the region's other trails,
such as the Coleridge Way ( Click here ). Wherever you plan to head out, always check
whether riding is permitted.
Many stables on Dartmoor and Exmoor are either on, or within very easy reach of, the
open moors. They cater to novices and experienced riders alike - expect to pay around £40
for a two-hour hack. The British Horse Society (
02476-840500; www.bhs.org.uk ) lists approved
stables.
Many riding centres offer accommodation. This can range from luxurious farmhouses to
basic camping; some will even put your horse up for the night, too.
