Thicker wetsuits mean you can surf year-round; perversely the biggest swells usually
come amid autumn and winter low-pressures. Good surf in the summer sunshine is not un-
common but can't be guaranteed.
Cornwall and Devon's north shores tend to enjoy better conditions, but wind and swell
directions mean different beaches on either coast can be better on the day. Check the latest

Kitesurfing's growing popularity sees fleets of brightly coloured canopies sweeping the
southwest's skies on windy days. The

Dartmoor's deep, steep gorges ensure heavy winter rains turn stretches of the River Dart
into foaming, fast-flowing water - riding them is a truly thrilling experience. The rapids
are only open between October and March. Winter kayaking also takes place on the
