Safety & the Environment
Some of Devon and Cornwall's walking environments, especially the moors, have their
dangers. Note the military uses part of Dartmoor for firing practice using live ammunition.
On some of the southwest's trails (especially Dartmoor) there's little signposting; carrying
a map and compass, and knowing how to use them is recommended. Region-wide the ele-
ments could catch you out: warm waterproof clothing, water, hats and sunscreen are es-
sential.
You have a legal right to walk on footpaths, bridleways and byways. In national parks
you can often walk on other areas deemed 'open country'; check with NPAs and local au-
thorities if in any doubt. Along with usual guidelines, hikers are asked to leave historic
sites undisturbed, not to feed ponies or other animals, and to consider leaving the car be-
hind.
