Car & Motorcycle
Devon and Cornwall can't claim an extensive motorway network - there are none west of Exeter. While many stretches
of the counties' key 'A' roads are dual carriageway, some aren't, and the lesser 'A' roads are rarely so.
Sometimes the sheer volume of traffic overwhelms the road network. Be aware: in the southwest in the summer, even
on a clear road, when the sign before a bend says 'traffic queuing ahead' - it's probably going to be true.
The region's cities feature the usual ring roads, traffic jams and sometimes confusing one-way systems - Torquay and
Exeter can be particularly bad. Many towns and cities have pedestrian-only central zones.
'A' roads and many 'B' roads have plenty of petrol and service stations. But it's worth filling up before heading off
these main routes into rural areas, onto the moors or lesser-used coastal routes.
In the towns and cities fuel prices mirror those nationwide, but rise as you head into the countryside.
