Bus
Travelling by bus to the southwest is cheap and reliable, but normally takes longer than the train. National Express (
08717-818 178; www.nationalexpress.com ) has a comprehensive network of services to Devon and Cornwall.
Sample fares include London Victoria to Newquay (£35, 7½ hours, four daily) and Edinburgh to Exeter (£45, 18 hours,
two daily). Special deals ('fun fares') can be a real bargain.
Car & Motorcycle
The vast majority of visitors to the southwest come by car, resulting in some serious traffic jams at peak times so try to
avoid obvious Bank Holiday and school holiday travel periods.
London's circular M25 leads onto the M4, which links into the M5 around Bristol. The M5 winds south to Exeter,
passing Exmoor National Park on the way. From the midlands and the north, the M6 links up with the M5 at Birming-
ham.
An alternative route west is the A303, which heads from the M3 towards Devon and Exmoor via Stonehenge. It has
some quite prolonged single-lane stretches. Some 20 miles east of Exeter the A303 becomes the A30, it then skirts Dart-
moor's northern fringe, heading on into Cornwall via Bodmin.
The 190-mile London-to-Exeter drive should take around 3½ hours; Birmingham to Newquay is 240 miles (five
hours); Edinburgh to Penzance is 560 miles (10½ hours). Expect to add anything from half an hour to two hours (and
beyond) for summer delays.
