en suite double and family rooms as well as dorms. Some specialise in activities. YHA membership is £16 for over 25s
and £10 for those between 16 and 25. You don't have to join to stay, but get a £3 per-night discount if you are.
INDEPENDENT HOSTELS
With a distinctly backpacker vibe, the southwest's independent hostels are the place to revel in the region's chilled-out
atmosphere. There's a good, region-wide network; expect to encounter cool city-centre pads, decks with beach views
and no-one bothering about sandy feet.
Dorms are quite often mixed-sex, prices average around £15 for a bed, but some peak at £25 in high season. Many
have double rooms costing around £45. Some have internet and laundry facilities. The Independent Hostels Guide
( www.independenthostelguide.co.uk ) is a useful resource.

Hotels
Devon and Cornwall's hotels tend to be posher, bigger and have more facilities than the region's B&Bs. There are the
usual UK chains, plus independent, business-oriented, smooth, corporate affairs. Others are boutique beauties - the kind
of luxurious coastal and country house options that are travel experiences in themselves. We outline the best throughout
the guide.
Prices & Booking
As befits one of the UK's top holiday destinations, prices in Devon and Cornwall take a hefty hike upwards in the high
season, particularly from June to August. You may like to consider scheduling plans to take advantage of low-season
deals. Prices also spike around Christmas, New Year, Easter and major bank holidays. If you're travelling within these
peak times, booking ahead is pretty much essential.
Most B&Bs still include breakfast in their rates. Some quote prices per person and some quote prices per room. Ho-
tels tend to outline room rates but occasionally tack breakfast on top. Special deals are often available at the last minute
and out of the main holiday times. It can also be cheaper to book direct, by phone, with the hotel or B&B.
Pubs & Inns
The West Country's ancient inns offer fabulous meals, real ales and cosy places to sleep. They're also at the heart of
community life - providing you with an authentic slice of local life. Accommodation is often stylish, but is occasionally
seedy, with rooms a little too reminiscent of the atmosphere downstairs in the bar. You'll find the best inns in the west
throughout this topic.
Prices vary considerably, from £40/60 for a single/double to £90/150 and beyond.
