In-Depth Information
Theatre
Despite being 200 odd miles from London's West End, the turnover of the Theatre Royal Ply-
mouth ( Click here ) is only bettered by the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare
Company (RSC). That's down in part to its innovative TR2 production centre, which fea-
tures facilities for set, costume, prop-making, and stage-sized rehearsal spaces. It helps at-
tract world premieres (such as Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands ) and secures work
to produce key shows ( Legally Blond e and Shrek for the West End, and Mary Poppins, the
Australian tour). The theatre's award-winning Drum performance space pioneers new writ-
ing; highlights include Love, Love, Love ; The Empire and pool (no water) .
In the Minack Theatre ( Click here ) , Cornwall has a stunning, unique performance space.
Cut into the cliffs near Land's End, this amphitheater was started by indomitable Rowena
Cade in the 1930s. The season runs from June to September and features touring and local
productions.
Cornish-based theatre company Kneehigh ( www.kneehigh.co.uk ) is one of the most innovative
and exciting in the UK. Joyful, anarchic and acclaimed productions include Tristan &
Yseult , Nights at the Circus , A Matter of Life and Death (at the National), and Cymbeline
(in association with the RSC). Also look out for their pop-up theatre, the Asylum, near St
Agnes.
