Recent Artists
Half a century on, west Cornwall remains an important centre for British art: Penwith
claims a higher concentration of artists than anywhere else in the UK, outside London's
East End. Among the best-known is St Just-based Kurt Jackson, who is famous for his ex-
pressive, often environmental-themed landscapes. He's also been artist-in-residence at the
Eden Project.
The abstract experiments of the 1950s and '60s continues in the work of contemporary
Cornish artists, including Trevor Bell, Noel Betowski and Jeremy Annear. Meanwhile, in
Devon, Damien Hirst is linked to Ilfracombe. Verity , his 20m statue of a naked, pregnant,
half-flayed woman, towers over the harbour mouth and his installations dot the walls of
his restaurant, 11 The Quay ( Click here ) .
