Wine
The mild southwest weather ensures good conditions for vineyards, and sipping a chilled
glass of white on a sun-drenched terrace, overlooking rows of vines feels more like Chab-
lis than the southwest. These wineries are worth seeking out.
Sharpham ( Click here ) Set in 200 stunning, south Devon hectares, wine ranges from £11 for a decent off-dry white to
£23 for a rich red Pinot Noir-Precoce blend.
Camel Valley ( Click here ) A north Cornwall award-winner; try its aromatic and appropriately named Bacchus (£13).
Polgoon ( 01736-333946; www.cornishwine.co.uk ; Rosehill, Penzance) Near Penzance, produces award-winning
still rosé and a champagne-style pear drink.
Yearlstone ( Click here ) Take a tour, then eat and drink beside these east Devon vines.
Gin
Plymouth Gin ( Click here ) is the oldest producing distillery in the world. For 200 years no
British Royal Navy vessel left port without its own supply of the brand, helping it spread
to drinking dens and the world's first cocktail bars. Today distillery tours allow you to
sniff botanicals and carry out taste tests.
