Britain joins the EEC (European Economic Community), opening up the region's fishing grounds to
foreign trawlers for the first time.
1998
The closure of South Crofty, the last working mine in Cornwall, results in thousands of job losses
and an end to over 4000 years of metal mining in Cornwall.
2001
Foot and mouth strikes the southwest. The Eden Project opens in a disused Cornish clay pit. The
Jurassic Coast becomes the UK's first natural World Heritage Site.
2006
The Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape is recognised by Unesco for its cultural and histor-
ical importance.
2011
After a long campaign, the Cornish pasty finally receives 'protected geographical indication' (PGI)
status.
2012
On 19 May 2012, the official Olympic Torch arrives at Land's End before making its journey around
Britain, arriving in London 70 days later to mark the start of the Games.
